UMEA Games 2024 | Girls Final
Agnes Nabukenya scored a brace as Kawempe Muslim beat Masaka SS in the girls’ football final on Monday, April 1, 2024.
Kawempe Muslim was the better side right from the start but were so wasteful in front of goal.
As the first stanza neared an end, Nabukenya’s prowess came into play as she broke the deadlock with a thrilling finish.
Later on Masaka SS were on the wrong side of the law as the ball went off one of the defender’s hand while in the box.
But Nabukenya failed to convert from the 12-yard mark as her attempt went wide of the frame thus keeping Masaka SS’s hopes high.
However, Nabukenya redeemed her name as she doubled Kawempe’s lead with a long-range strike towards the final minute of the duel.
The victory guided Kawempe to the podium as they successfully defended their prestigious title.
Nabukenya was also named the top scorer of the tournament as she managed to bag 26 goals, 14 of which were scored during the 24-0 victory against debutants Kabukunge Muslim.
FUFA Women Super League | Sunday Results
On Sunday morning, Kawempe Muslim WFC defeated Rines 3-2 in their FUFA Women Super League opener at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso.
It rained goals on both sides, but Kawempe’s poise earned them the victory in the open game.
Early in the first half, Hadijah Babirye, Phionah Nabulime, and Agnes Nabukenya found Kawempe’s goals
On the other hand, Catherine Wujja and Yaseem Nalukwago scored the two goals of the hosts who kept fighting till the last minute.
Babirye scored from close range just a few minutes into the contest. After being thwarted by the frame earlier, she guided the rebound into the net.
Wujja went on to equalize with a tremendous header off Jesica Namanda’s ball, tying the score.
Nabulime restored Kawempe’s lead in the 37th minute with a lovely touch to steer in Nabukenya’s lofted cross.
Seven minutes later, creator Nabukenya scored after capitalizing on a blunder by Rines’ backline, who failed to clear their lines.
The hosts improved their goal-scoring chances in the second half, but Kawempe’s defense held firm.
Shakira Nankwanga fouled Aminah Babirye in the hazardous area shortly after the final whistle, and Rines were awarded a penalty.
Rines’ captain stepped up but was unable to convert from the spot, as her shot deflected off the frame and was ruled out.
Substitution in the second half Moreen Nankinga’s corner kick was headed home by Nalukwago, but it was too late.
On the following matchday, Rines will face Uganda Martyrs, while Kawempe will welcome UCU Lady Cardinals.
Quarterfinals Results
Amus College ended Kawempe Muslim’s journey in the ongoing Ball Games 2 in the quarterfinals.
The worst reach by the Valley Warriors has always been the semifinal exit that came in 2018.
Last year’s runners-up were held by Amus in normal time to play to a 1-1 stalemate before they were shocked in the deciding penalties.
Hadijah Nandago gave Kawempe the lead with a calm effort from 12 yards at the start of the first half.
Ten minutes later, Amus thought the matters were levelled but the centre referee cut short their joy after citing an infringement on the custodian Saidat Namwajje.
But at the death, Amus found a well-deserved equaliser to take the tight duel to penalties.
The penalties were tight but interesting as each side missed once in the first five.
Later, they went on to miss thrice before Halima Kampi hit her effort wide and Amus scored.
The victory set up a semifinal lineup where Amus will face Mukono Parents High School while Rines SS will play St Noa Girls SS.
Kawempe Muslim secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Ball Games 2 in Mbarara.
In an entertaining duel played at Kakyeka Stadium, Kawempe beat Shuuku Vocational School 2-0 to continue with their perfect run.
As early as the ninth minute, Agnes Nabukenya gave the Valley Warriors the deserved narrow lead.
In the 18th minute, Hadijah Nandago doubled the lead to place Kawempe in the driving seat.
They had several chances to extend the lead but were so wasteful in the game they would stretch the edge.
“I am so grateful and thankful to Allah who has enabled us to win this game and go to the quarterfinals,” Nandago said after the final whistle.
“Hopefully we go further because we are much prepared for the games going forward. We wasted a number of chances today and I hope we shall put up a better show in our next game,” she added.
On the other hand, Shuuku captain Shabela Abahora was glad for the journey moved and choose to pick positives that will help them in the next tournament.
“It’s sad that our journey has come to an end but there are a number of positives that will help us in next year’s tournament,” Abahora said.
“This is the first time the team has reached the round of 16. We are young girls and I am sure we shall go back and prepare so that we come back stronger,” she noted.
Record champions Kawempe Muslim obliterated Moroto High School in a 12-0 victory to pick a spot in the knockout stage.
This was the fifth victory of Kawempe Muslim who had already beaten Panyadoli Secondary School, Buhobe Secondary School and Sheema Girls School.
However, they concluded the group-stage business with a scoring party against debutante Moroto High.
Krusoom Namutebi pulled down the curtains to open the party in the 13th minute before Hadijah Nandago doubled the lead a minute later.
In the 25th minute, Shadia Nabirye found the back of the net and two minutes later Nandago completed a brace to get the rhythm going and moving steadily.
Seven minutes to half time, Nandago completed a hat trick to show the world how clinical she can be in front of goal.
Right after recess, the FUFA Super Women Super League, most valuable player (MVP) and top scorer, Shakira Nyinagahirwa also placed her name on the scoring sheet.
Nabukenya, Nyinagahirwa, Nandago and Nabirye later scored each to complete a dozen of goals.
The maximum points take Kawempe to the top of Group H with 15 points and 12 goals.
Kawempe lost to St Noa Girls 1-0 in the finals of last year. The Valley Warriors seek to reclaim their title.
