Maroons FC put an end to Kitara’s perfect run after a 1-0 victory in the Uganda Premier League at Masindi Stadium on Wednesday.
Fred Amaku was on target as Maroons picked maximum points away from home.
It was a close but entertaining game that needed to be split by just one moment.
David Bayiga was lucky to complete the game after surviving a second booking. The lanky defender fouled Brian Aheebwa through a high tackle but the referee was so kind to look away.
Paul Mucureezi had a chance to put the hosts upfront but his freekick could not go past Maroons strong wall with six minutes left to play the first half.
Amaku finally put the visitors ahead in the 59th minute. The forward beat his marker Donato Okello before guiding a powerful effort past Kitara’s custodian Crispus Kusiima.
Kitara were blessed with a chance to level matters after David Ndihabwe’s high boot got to Jude Ssemugabi in the dangerous area and referee Vincent Kavuma awarded the home side a penalty. Denis Omedi stepped up for the challenge but Hannington Ssenwalunyo thwarted the powerful effort in the 78th minute.
Kabon Living was denied by the woodwork after his free kick went past the wall. The home side through all bodies upfront but could not go past Maroons strong backline.
The victory takes the Prison Wardens to 11 points after six games while Kitara FC are second with 15 points.
Maroons FC beat KCCA FC 2-1 in the Uganda Premier League at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Tuesday evening.
It was salt into KCCA’s wounds who were recently knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.
The game started at a slow pace as most of the action got down in the middle park without either side committing upfront.
Fred Amaku’s cool touch steps away from the goal line placed the Prison Wardens in the driving seat.
Abraham Tusubira laid a great pass in David Ndihabwe’s way, the captain threaded a shot on goal that was palmed back into play by goalkeeper Juma Mutebi and Amaku was quick to place the ball home.
Six minutes to the end of the first stanza, KCCA came close as Usama Arafat saw his low hard effort fully gripped by Maroons custodian Amir Nalugoda.
As the end of the first half was looming, Muhammad Shaban levelled matters with a touch squeezing through after a mix-up in Maroons box.
Six minutes into the second half, Nalugoda was called to action to make a save punching away Abubaker Mayanja’s fine-flying header off Moses Waiswa’s flick.
As the second stanza went on, the Kasasiro Boys knitted together some fine short and long passes but could not find the defence-splitting pass to find the target.
In the 70th minute, the ball bounced off Fredrick Kigozi’s hand in the dangerous area and Shamirah Nabadda pointed at the spot. Usama Arafat stepped up to the occasion but his effort bounced off the frame and went out.
With nine minutes to play, Amaku restored the visitors’ lead with another close finish. Kigozi brought in a great cross and defender Patrick Bayiga latched on it, Mutebi tried to save the effort but it fell onto Amaku’s foot and he guided it home.
The victory took Maroons to seven points in three games while KCCA is pointless with two losses in two games played so far.
It will take less than 48 hours for KCCA to return on the green in the Uganda Premier League at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
After failing to qualify for the CAF Confederation group stages, KCCA FC will play Maroons in the second league game on Tuesday, October 3.
Speaking at the press conference, KCCA FC head coach Sergio Traguil expressed readiness saying there is no time to cry after spilt milk.
“There is no time to mourn. We have to now think of moving forward,” he said before adding; “It’s time to turn to our biggest objective and that is the league.”
The Kasasiro Boys beat Abu Salem 3-2 but it was not enough to guide them past the Libyan side. Sergio reveals the players are still emotionally down but they will eventually get over it.
“It’s not easy to have just two days to put everything together but we shall try to work on recovery. We shall make sure we do everything to get ready.
“It has been a mix of feelings because they felt they would have done better. They know they could go further more so after the second match.
“We lost the tie (5-4 on aggregate) in the first game. We had the quality to be there (group stages) but instead made it easy for the opponent,” he stressed.
The Portuguese stressed the need to win the league so that they are capable of achieving the biggest objective of the league.
“We have to win the league no matter the challenge. So the boys are very ready for the game. We have talked about it before and am sure they know.
“They know the importance of winning the league this season. We have set our target and we now want to plan how we can achieve going forward.
“Maroons are a very good game. We expect a tough game but it will be so easy if we choose to do the right things thus keeping away from silly mistakes.”
Last season, KCCA picked just a point from the possible six in the tough tie against the Prison Wardens.

In the 25th minute, Fred Amaku stung SC Villa goalkeeper Norman Angfidru’s gloves with a hard shot but the custodian palmed it away.
Abasi Kyeyune and Hakim Mutebi combined to give Maroons’ defence a hard time before the latter was fouled at the edge of the box.

Mutebi beat his marker Jacob Okao to the pace with two minutes left in the first stanza before he laid in a cut back into the area, but Sebwalunyo was quick to get hold of the ball.
In the second half, the Prison Wardens kicked off with the right pace and Abraham Tusubira continued the hosts’ attacks.

Maroons registered a well-deserved 3-0 victory against Wakiso Giants in the Uganda Premier League at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on Sunday.
The Purple Sharks started the 2023/24 campaign on a sad note after suffering a huge loss to the Prison Wardens at home.
Darius Ojok gave Maroons the lead two minutes into the game. The 2022/23 UPL young player of the season was cool and confident burying away Abraham Tusubira’s delivery.
Wakiso Giants came so close through George Kaddu but his freekick was blocked by Ronald Orombi.
Marvin Nyanzi witnessed his effort bounce off the frame before Patrick Bayiga nearly scored into his own net.
Ojok showed his class once again after he beat Wakiso’s backline to set up Fred Amaku but the forward failed to guide the ball into an empty net.
In the 34th Ojok extended Maroons’ lead with a delightful tap in off Tusubira’s delivery.
In the second half, the pace duly fell as none of the two sides fully took control of the game.
In the 79th minute, Tusubira looped the ball past Wakiso Giants’ custodian Kenneth Lukuya who had moved off the line.
The victory takes Maroons on top of the log since it’s the biggest winning margin among the victors on Matchday one.
Next on the menu, Maroons host SC Villa on Sunday, September 24 while Wakiso Giants will make a short trip to Kavumba to play neighbours Bright Stars on Saturday.
SC Villa registered a narrow 2-1 victory in the FUFA Super 8 quarterfinals at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Thursday.
SC Villa started with the most required pace committing several bodies in search of an opener right away.
In the 12th minute, Hakim Mutebi found the back of the net hence putting the home side ahead and the fans responded with drums and chants.
With a minute to hit the half-hour mark, Maroons levelled matters with a fine finish through Hadadi Kambugu to get back into the game.
From that point onward, Maroons got charge of the game forcing the hosts to get on the back fit but the score kept intact until the break.
At the start of the second stanza, SC Villa made an instant change introducing Ivan Bogere for Abas Kyeyune.
In the second half, Villa got better making well-crafted runs thus taking control of the game.
Seven minutes past half an hour mark, Denis Ojara turned up in the most required moment forcing the ball into this regaining Villa’s lead.
The victory for SC Villa takes the Jogoo to the semifinals where they will play against BUL FC that earlier edged Vipers in a 1-0 victory.
The tournament will continue tomorrow as URA FC take on Bright Stars at Metha Stadium, Lugazi while KCCA will lock horns with Wakiso Giants.
Uganda Premier League side Maroons FC has announced the signing of Hannington Ssebwalunyo ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Ssebwalunyo, the free agent joins the Prison wardens shortly after being released by URA FC.
The lanky custodian is expected to feel the void left by Simon Tamale who recently made a professional move to join Rwanda’s Rayon Sports.
The gaffer has been awarded a two-year employment contract that will see him stay in Luzira atleast until 2025.
In his first interview with the Maroons FC media team, he expressed his excitement about joining such a promising project.
“Comming back to Maroons is something very special for me and my family, Luzira is a place I call home. We shall achieve a lot here collectively,” he noted.
Ssebwalunyo hardly got playing time failing to beat the competition by Nafian Alionzi who also doubled as the team’s captain.
But at Maroons he is sure of playing and regaining his craft to emulate the great goalkeeper he has been in the previous seasons.
Tamale was named the best goalkeeper last season after making 13 clean sheets in a campaign that attracted suitors across the region.
Ssebwalunyo’s first assignment will be keeping his goal area safe as the Maroons face SC Villa in the FUFA Super 8 on Thursday August 10.
Maroons FC head coach Mohammed Senfuma has committed to his future at Luzira, signing a three-year employment contract.
Senfuma’s former contract was meant to run out at the end of June but the two parties swiftly agreed to renew their marriage ahead of the coming season.
The development was made public on Sunday, June 25 via their official club website.
“I can not be in a better place other than Maroons,” Senfuma was quoted by the Maroons FC website.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to challenge for more, I am so pleased to be staying at the club that has given me a chance and platform to excel,” he went.
Maroons guided his troops to the sixth position in the just concluded 2022/23 campaign.
The thrilling season saw the Prison Warden post some good results against the league’s top sides hence making their home in Luzira a tough place to visit.
According to the club’s CEO, Rodrick Muhumuza revealed that Senfuma has already contributed a lot to the club and both sides only look forward to what lies ahead.
Muhumuza further noted that the club is committed to strengthening the squad by renewing the contracts of players and adding a few more so that they can compete next season.

Maroons registered a 1-0 well-deserved victory against log leaders in the Uganda Premier League in Luzira on Wednesday evening.
The all-important goal from Ronald Orombi inspired the Prison Wardens past the Jogoo on a cloudy evening.
Jackson Magera’s troops suffered the seventh loss of the ongoing campaign after playing 25 games off the lineup of 28.
In the 24th minute, Ivan Bogere thought he had given SC Villa the lead but his bouncing header rattled off the woodwork before custodian Simon Tamale finger-tipped the rebound.
Eight minutes later, the Wardens took the lead through Ronald Orombi whose powerful strike found the back of the net.
This came after Edward Masembe threw his body on the line to block Brian Kayanja’s hard effort but Orombi was in the perfect place to rebound.
Three minutes after an hour mark, Charles Bbaale set up Patrick Jonah Kakande but the forward’s touch was denied by the goalpost before Tamale picked the remains.
In the last minute of the game, Tamale fumbled with the ball and lost possession to Travis Mutyaba but the latter’s resultant effort went above the frame.
The loss leaves SC Villa on top of the log with 46 points while Maroons move fifth with 36.
Next on the log, SC Villa hosts Blacks Power on Tuesday, May 9 while Maroons visit Gaddafi on the same day.
