FUFA Women Super League | Result

Kawempe Muslim secured a 3-1 victory in the FUFA Women’s Super League at Kabaka Kyabaggu on Sunday.

Under cloudy skies, the two sides played on soggy, challenging ground in front of a small crowd.

Agnes Nabukenya, Mebel Adong, and Shakira Nyinagahirwa scored a goal each, and Kawempe secured maximum points.

On the other hand, Patricia Nakato was on target as Rines went down fighting at home.

Despite a slow start from either side, Rines took the lead in the 20th minute through Patricia Nakato who converted from the 12-yard mark.

At the stroke of the first stanza, Agnes Nabukenya was tripped in the area, the forward stepped up to the occasion and smartly levelled matters.

Adong fired the visitors ahead early in the second half as Rines’ backline failed to clear their lines.

Nyinagahirwa extended Kawempe’s lead with the third goal of the day. It was an emotional moment for Nyinagahirwa and the fans after her return from a long-term injury.

The victory keeps Kawempe Muslim in the second position with six points while Rines drop to seventh with 18 points.

Experienced guard Tonny Drileba joined fans’ favourite Namuwongo Blazers in the ongoing transfer window.

Drilleba completed the switch alongside James Okello, Henry Ssebagala and Moses Mugisha who were unveiled to the public in a ceremony held at ABJA Park in Nalya.

Speaking about the transfer, Drileba expressed excitement after completing the move but also promised to his all to the new club.

“I am glad to be here and I promise to give 100% whenever given a chance to put on the jersey,” Drileba said.

“To the fans, they should expect good basketball because I am here to win. I have played competitive basketball but this is a fresh assignment and am ready for it,” he added.

Drileba appreciated the organisation and structures the Nam Blazers have established, believing that they will take them to the next level.

“I like being part of something that is structured. Over the years the Blazers have done a great job. Right now they are in a better place and they can compete,” he stated.

“I feel the time is right and glad to be part of something like this. The targets are high and the goal is to win the championship. We are going to season with respect for everyone but are hungry to win,” he concluded.

National Basketball League (NBL) side Namuwongo Blazers has bolstered its squad with four new signings ahead of the 2025 season.

At an event held at their home ground, ABJA Park in Nalya, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, the Blazers unveiled Tonny Drileba, James Okello, Moses Mugisha, and Henry Ssebagala as their latest additions.

Drileba and Okello, who previously played for the City Oilers, left the team after the first round of the 2024 NBL campaign.

The duo then had stints with Burundi’s Tigers Basketball Club and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Chaux Sports before making their return to Uganda’s top league.

With a combined 21 NBL titles between them, Okello and Drileba, along with veteran Jimmy Enabu, have a lot to prove as they don the Nam Blazers’ jersey.

The 2025 NBL season is set to tip off on Wednesday, March 15, and excitement is already building within the basketball fraternity.

Shakira Nanvubya, after six successful years with the UCU Lady Canons, has finally departed from the Mukono-based club.

In an emotional farewell message, she expressed deep gratitude for her time at UCU, stating, “UCU will forever be home.”

Nanvubya enjoyed immense success with the Lady Canons, capturing six titles during her tenure.

“I feel privileged to have shared so many happy moments with my teammates,” she said, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in her achievements.

While leaving UCU, Nanvubya is excited to embark on a new chapter with JT Lady Jaguars.

“I am happy to be at JT Lady Jaguars. I am still hungry to win more,” she stated, expressing her determination to excel in her new role.

Reflecting on her time at UCU, Nanvubya expressed heartfelt gratitude for the transformative experience.

“I came as a little girl, and now I leave as a grown-up lady,” she emotionally stated, acknowledging the invaluable experiences and opportunities she gained during her time with the club.

Nanvubya’s departure marks the end of an era for the UCU Lady Canons, but her legacy at the university will undoubtedly endure.

NEC head coach Hussein Mbalangu has called upon his troops to remain consistent after a thrilling start to the 2024-25 Uganda Premier League campaign.

NEC secured a 1-0 victory against UPDF following well deserved wins against Vipers and NEC on match day one and two.

“I am very proud of what we are doing as a team and you can see the effort of every player,” Mbalangu revealed.

“Whatever we have done so far is according to plan because last season we were playing well but lacked consistency in the results,” he added,

“So this time round we are trying to improve that aspect of recording a series of victories which was impossible last year where we used to win one the later draw or lose.”

“It is good to enjoy the moment that we are winning games but we have to continue with that mentality and that is how you improve as team going forward,” he concluded.

The Lugogo-based side has greatly improved its squad creating the deserving depth that allows the technical team go for different dimensions of the game.

After finishing sixth in the previous season, NEC believe that they have all it takes to try and go all the way for the title.

They will return to action on Thursday, October as they visit Express at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo as they seek to keep their winning streak alive.

Jane Asinde was part of the JKL Lady Dolphins that clinched the 2024 National Basketball League title after seeing off UCU Lady Canons.

It was a sweet championship for Asinde since it was her maiden local league title despite being the fourth for the club.

In the after math of the championship, the Gazelles captain hinted on her next destination being China where she expected to play her first professional stint.

“I am going to play my first pro basketball for a club in China,” Asinde told CK Sports.

“I cannot say it all now but am excited about the new venture and I cannot wait to get going,” she added.

Asinde has previously played at USA based UTEP Women’s basketball team before returning home to help the Lady Dolphins defend their title.

Abby Priscilla and Mary Amaniyo will take the button from Asinde as they continue their stay at UTEP back in USA.

JKL Lady Dolphins levelled the series 2-2 in game four of the final in the National Basketball League at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Dolphins secured a well-deserved 60-53 victory in a closely contested game in front of a loud crowd.

Evelyn Nakiyingi’s layup created a (20-8) 12-point lead for the JKL Lady Dolphins ahead of the UCU Lady Canons at the end of the first stanza.

Flavia Oketcho’s long shot beyond the arc helped the Lady Dolphins go into the long break with a nine-point (33-24) lead.

Despite the fight by the Mukono-based side in the second half, the reigning champion sailed away with a seven-point victory.

Jane Asinde led the the Lady Dolphins’ scoring chart with an amazing double-double dropping 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

In the same breath, Brenda Ekone added 10 points to the Lady Dolphins’ scoring chart.

Shillah Lamunu and Shakirah Nanvubya scored 14 points each before the latter pulled down 10 rebounds for the Canons.

NBL Finals | Result

The defending champions, City Oilers, secured a 70-61 victory over KIU Titans in Game One of the National Basketball League Finals on Wednesday evening.

The win gives the City Oilers a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series.

The reigning champions dominated the first period, building a three-point (19-16) lead.

The Oilers further asserted their foot into the game as they created an eight-point (37-29) lead going into the long break.

However, KIU Titans staged a comeback in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to just one point (51-50).

Ultimately, the Oilers’ experience and consistent scoring proved too much for the Titans as secured a nine-point victory.

Parrish Petty led the way for the Oilers with 20 points, while Malual Dier and Fayed Baale added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Titus Lual grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.

On the Titans’ side, Peter Obleng scored 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Oilers’ advantage.

The series now shifts to Lugogo Indoor Arena for Game Two on Friday, August 30.

NBL Finals | Fixture

UCU Lady Canons will face off against JKL Lady Dolphins in a highly anticipated game one of the National Basketball League Finals on Wednesday at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

JKL Lady Dolphins come into the affair as the defending champions while the UCU Lady Canons brag as the record champions with eight titles onto their name.

The two sides have faced thrice in the final, and the Lady Dolphins have won twice (in 2018 and 2019) while the Lady Canons edged the former in 2022.

The Lady Canons’ captain, Shakira Nanvubya, believes a good start would be of great importance in the series.

“I hope we can get a positive start in today’s game because it will swing the momentum in our favour,” she said.

“We have prepared well, and I believe the team is in a good shape to put up the required fight against them (JKL Lady Dophins). The coaches have done a good job, and it’s left to us to execute,” she added.

“They (Lady Dolphins) are a good team, and that’s for sure, but we are equally good. If everyone on our team gives us the best, then we can easily win the game.”

The Lady Canons will have a big assignment of dealing with Lady Canons’ talented roaster bearing Jane Asinde, who has greatly improved the side.

NBL Playoffs | Result

The National Basketball League semifinal series between Namuwongo Blazers and KIU Titans took another dramatic turn on Thursday night at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The Blazers secured a hard-fought 75-68 victory, levelling the series at 2-2 and forcing a decisive Game 5.

Peter Obleng’s long shot climaxed the first quarter as KIU Titans opened a nine-point lead (25-16) at the end of an interesting period.

The Blazers fought back to narrow the gap to two points (38-36) by halftime.

In the third quarter, Namuwongo Blazers took control of the game, creating a six-point (59-53) lead heading into the final period.

Peter Cheng was a standout performer for the Blazers, contributing a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

Paul Odong and Choul Nyuot also played key roles, scoring 11 points each.

On the side of the Titans, Joel Lukoji (19 points), Juf Mpiya (13 points), and Peter Obleng (11 points) led the scoring with double-digit contributions.

The series now heads into a winner-takes-all Game 5, where both teams will be eager to secure their place in the NBL finals.

The stakes are high, and the fans can expect another thrilling encounter.
