Abdulnoor Nsereko clinched the top scorer’s gong of the 2023 Uganda Secondary Schools Association (USSSA) boy’s football championship.

Nsereko needed 11 goals to reach his dream in his maiden National Post Primary (NPP) games that were previously concluded in Fort Portal, Kabarole district.

“I thank Allah for allowing me to become the top scorer of the just concluded USSSA games,” Nsereko said.

“I am so thankful to Allah for coming this far. It’s so kind and loving that among the 1280 players from 64 schools, it’s me to walk home with the award,” he added.

Nsereko joined Kitende in 2019 but hardly found a spot in the team right away due to the tough competition that he found.

Coming from Gaddafi Integrated, he was a star but that was far from the welcoming message that was witnessed at his new side.

“I was coming from Gaddafi where I was a big star. Often, fellow students would chant my name, yet at Kitende I failed to make the travelling sheet to Soroti.”

Nsereko was disappointed since he found the team travelling to Soroti but failed to make the final 20. But later on, he joined Vipers’ training session and his patience was awarded a position in the academy of Vipers SC.

After squeezing into the Vipers Junior Team, the campaign was brought to an abrupt end due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The pandemic forced the forward to the sideline for two years and he returned to action in 2022 as he was part of the Buwekula Ssaza side that lost to Buddu 2-0 in the finals.

“Coming from the Masaza, I was so fit and lucky enough I got straight into the team that played zonal and regional games but I still failed to make the 20-man sheet that went for nationals.”

That year, Nsereko scored six goals, three behind the top scorer but that was not enough to be considered for the travelling side to Arua District, though Kitende later went on and won the title.

But in 2023, Nsereko finally got his much-awaited spot as the school’s first-choice striker.

He hardly disappointed, scoring eight in the Wakiso Regional games to click the top scorer’s boot.

He later entered the Nationals at Fort Portal and scored 11 to guide his side to the 11th USSSA title to equal rivals Kibuli SS.

St Mary’s Secondary School Kitende (SMASK) clinched the 11th USSSA Football title to level record champions Kibuli SS.

St Mary’s Kitende has been crowned champions after edging St Henry’s Kitovu in a 1-0 victory at Nyakasura playground in Fort Portal.

Hanib Oloya’s goal was all that Kitende needed to walk back to Wakiso as Champions.

Samuel Lukooye warmed Marvin Ssebirango’s gloves with a long-range shot in the first minute of the game but the custodian dealt with the challenge.

Minutes later, Abubaker Walusimbi came close with a powerful but the effort went wide as the defending champions clearly showed intent right away.

In the fourth minute, Kitovu got their first chance through Collins Ocatre but the forward wrongly guided the ball with the goal at his disposal.

Kitende came close once again in the 23rd minute but Lukooye’s shot rattled off the crossbar before Kitovu’s backline cleared the ball far from danger.

Once again, Justine Opiro was the deliverer as his long throw-in gave Kitovu’s defender trouble.

Oloya headed the dropping ball into the back of the net before Nereko got the last touch as it rolled in.

But the goal was credited to Oloya after review.

Kitende was on the receiving end later on but was calm and sucked in the pressure from Kitovu.

The victory meant, Kitende managed to smartly defend the title after winning it last year in Arua.

It was a sweet revenge for Daniel Male’s troops who fell to Kitovu in a Group A game loss (2-1).

Kitende, Kitovu, Amus College and Royal Giants will represent Uganda in the East Africa games that will be hosted in Rwanda.

St Mary’s Secondary School Kitende advanced for the final of the ongoing USSSA Boys Football championship in Fort Portal.

Kitende ousted Amus College after playing to a one-all draw in the second semifinal duel at Nyakasura playground.

Frank Katongole found the back of the net connecting on a rebound after Amus College’s backline failed to deal with a long throw-in by Justine Opiro.

However, in the 24th minute, Allan Oyirwoth rose past Ronald Madoi to powerfully node home hence levelling matters.

At the stroke of the first stanza, Kitende were awarded a penalty after the ball went off the Amus’ defender.

Olimi Nyarwa stepped up to the occasion but placed the ball wide of goal.

Amus’ Ashiru Ssembatya missed his penalty kick as Kitende’s custodian Allan Bantali punched it away.

Amus’ three spots were converted by Toto Majubu, Abdul Razak and Samuel Ola.

While Kitende’s five spots were scored by Derrick Kato, Habib Oloya, Ronald Madoi, Samuel Lukuye and Hakim Mutebi.

The victory means the defending champions will play against St Henry’s Kitovu in the finals.

The two sides met in group A and Kitovu edged Kitende in a 2-1 victory.

Kitende are the defending champions having beaten St Kaggwa in last year’s finals that were held in Arua.

St. Henry’s Kitovu 2-1 St. Mary’s Kitende

St. Henry’s Kitovu ended St Mary’s Kitende’s perfect in the ongoing 2023 USSSA Games in Fort Portal.

Kitende fell to SHACK in a 2-0 loss which ended their splendid run having won five previous games without conceding a goal.

In the 18th minute, Lawrence Walakira rose highest and nodded home to give Kitovua a narrow lead.

Later on, Kitovu were reduced to ten men after Collins Ochatre was given marching orders.

From that note, Kitende was the better side as they came knocking on Kitovu’s door but the backline was up to the task.

In the 55th minute, Hakim Mutebi levelled matters thus restoring Kitende’s hope.

In the dying minutes, Alfred Ejoyi found the back of the net to give Kitovu maximum points as well as give the crowd a reason to get on top of their voices.

The victory took Kitovu to the top of the log with 16 points while Kitende drop into the second slot with 15 points.

Kitovu will take on Tororo Town College while Kitende will lock horns with Nakaseke International.

USSSA Games 2023 – Boys Football

Wednesday, May 10 | Group A

St Mary’s Kitende continued with a perfect run in the ongoing Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) boy’s football in Fort Portal.

The reigning champions registered a 3-0 victory against Bishop Comboni College Kambuga to make it two wins in two games on Wednesday morning.

In the game played at Kitarasa playground, Abdul Nsereko registered a brace before Olimi Nyarwa added to make it three and ensure they keep on the positive run.

Kitende found a hard time breaking down Bishop Comboni’s defence line that was so committed to picking a point in the tough duel.

Nsereko opened the scoring late with a header past custodian Alisema Kakuru to break the deadlock.

Olimi later converted from the spot to extend the lead and Nsereko hit the last nail in Bishop Comboni’s coffin to ensure the assignment is executed.

“We worked hard to break down the opponents,” Joackim Mukungu, assistant head coach of Kitende said.

“I credit the players for the job well done as we plan for the remaining games in the group,” he added.

With six points from two games, Kitende is second on the log behind St Henry’s Kitovu who have a goal more than the latter.

Two minutes later, Abdul Nsereko extended the lead with a header from close range after being set up by Olimi Nyarwa

Hakim Mutebi joined the scoring sheet in the 16th minute after shooting home Opiro’s low sweet pass in the area.

This came after Tororo Town College defenders failed to deal with Nsereko’s pace on the right flank before he dashed in a pass to meet Kitende’s captain Opiro.

At half an hour mark, Olimi placed the ball past the far post with a low powerful effort to make it four with five minutes left to play in the first stanza.

Tororo’s backline was more solid in the second half and denied Kitende from extending their tally.

Daniel Male made a number of changes to bring on fresh legs but still the damage could not get worse.
