University Football League | Results

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) registered a 1-0 victory against Bugema University on Tuesday evening.

The first leg was a close duel that was played at Luwero but none of the sides would find the back of the net after playing 90 minutes.

However, in the second leg Stuart Mutebi scored the only goal to send the hosts into the semifinals of the ongoing UFL tournament.

In the 17th minute, Bin Said missed a glorious chance to put MUBS ahead as his effort went narrowly over the frame.

Ten minutes later, Yekole Talibu found himself in front of goal after landing on a great aerial duel but he could hardly find the target.

Before the end of the first stanza, the game got so physical as tackles started flying from either sides.

Fifteen minutes into the second stanza, defender Denis Wafula nearly gave the visitors a lead as MUBS goalkeeper Hillary Ayebare fumbled with the powerful effort.

With four minutes to play, Mutebi broke the deadlock with a tap in from close range before the home crowd flooded the pitch.

MUBS joins Uganda Christian University (UCU) in the last four. The tournament will return as Uganda Martyrs host Nkumba on Thursday March 7 in Nkozi.

Uganda Christian University (UCU) secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Makerere University in the University Football League on Thursday.

Isaac Ofoyirwoth scored the all-important goal as the hosts gathered bragging rights on the day in front of a huge crowd in the stands. The first leg ended 2-1 in favour of the Makerere and the UCU’s away goal turned out to be the difference.

UCU Cardinals pulled off a stunning victory to revenge the Makerere Enzymes that beat them 2-0 in the just concluded AUUS Inter-University games that were held in Mukono.

The game was treated to an electric start as both sides drew bodies upfront in search of an early opener.

Ivan Oceng was tripped on the edge of the box before he decided to take the challenge but his effort could not get past the wall thus putting to waste a glorious chance.

Osuna Cosmas tested UCU custodian Collins Wesonga with a powerful curler but the goalkeeper was equal to the challenge in the 27th minute.

Three minutes later, Ofoyirwoth guided the ball into the back of the net after the assistant referee sighted an offside in the beautiful build-up.

At the start of the second stanza, UCU head coach Jimmy Kintu introduced forward Derrick Tenywa for midfielder Ivan Mutebi.

The long-awaited moment finally came to place in the 48th minute as Ofoyirwoth broke the deadlock. It was a gift from Makerere custodian Joel Wejuli who gave defender Maurice Wansagi a chilly pass in front of the 16-yard area. Geoffrey Gaganga was alert winning possession but his effort was blocked by Wejuli before Ofoyirwoth scored from a rebound.

From that juncture the game opened up as the hosts kept knocking on the visitors’ door however Makerere’s skipper Ian Mudhasi was so calm and composed at the back.

Gaganga set up the on-running Tenywa who swiftly tapped the ball past Wejuli however it was flagged offside and the home crowd demonstrated in denial of the call.

But at the end of the day, it was a victory for the home side who matched into the semifinals awaiting for the other three sides to complete the puzzle.

Holders Uganda Martyrs University came from a goal down to draw with Nkumba in a 1-1 stalemate in the University Football League encounter on Wednesday.

It was an entertaining quarterfinal first-leg duel between two sides that were ready to throw bodies upfront however the return in goals was less compared to the chances created.

The hosts took an early lead through Ismael Lubega in the second minute, the forward’s precision and anticipation were crucial as he guided the ball into the back of the net.

Sixteen minutes later, Nkumba made a change introducing lanky forward Irivai Mamur in the place of Abbey Kikomeko who was so silent in the penalty area.

In the final minutes of the period, Uganda Martyrs were on the front foot searching for a leveller right away but were denied by an organised Nkumba backline.

A minute into the second period of the game, Akbar Ssentongo levelled matters to bring back the visitors into the game.

However, after a busy show on the day, none of the two sides came out victorious setting up a mouthwatering second-leg encounter.

After the final whistle of the game, Uganda Martyrs head coach Eric Kisuze revealed that he was happy with the draw and could only wait to seal the duel in the second leg.

“We are happy to pick a point from this game, we came knowing that we can get a win but that did not happen. Having picked a draw here we can go all the way and seal it in Nkozi,” Kisuze noted.

“It was an intense game and we slipped in the second minute thus getting punished. However at half time, I told the boys to calm down and play the game since we have found ourselves in such situations before,” he added.

“I commend the boys for the great fight and ensuring that at least we pick a positive today. We shall go back home and prepare so that we win the second leg.”

The two sides will be meeting in the second leg on Thursday, March 7 in Nkozi.

St. Lawrence University secured a 5-2 victory against Kampala University in the University Football encounter played on Tuesday evening.

In the busy game played at Prison Grounds in Luzira, the two sides treated the fans to a seven-goal galore. It was a repeat of last year’s quarterfinals where St. Lawrence came out victorious.

The visitors took the lead through Micheal Abura who nodded home from close range in the third minute of the game. The early goal gave the visitors energy throwing several bodies upfront to search for more goals.

The midfielder Abura beat many bodies from the middle park before he placed the ball on the near post to double the visitors’ lead ten minutes later.

Abura completed a hat-trick in the 16th minute. The midfielder was on sparkling form as he easily tapped home Innocent Matege’s sweet cut-back delivery.

At that moment, Kampala University’s head coach Vicent ‘Titi’ Tumusime made three quick charges to put a block to the humiliation.

From that juncture, Kampala University settled into the game limiting spaces for Abura and Matege in the middle park.

Before the end of the first stanza, Andrew Kafuko thought he had pulled back one for Kampala University before the assistant referee flagged it off.

On the other hand, Micheal Kayongo extended the visitors’ lead to four with yet another quick transition by David Ssozi’s troops.

In the 57th minute, Tonny Ndase finally pulled one back for the hosts after a powerful effort from the 12-yard mark.

With six minutes past the top of the hour, St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper Sulaiman Ssali guided Kampala University’s corner kick into his net.

Ten minutes later, the hosts found a glorious chance to find the third but Yosia Kisa failed to find the target with a goalkeeper to beat.

With eight minutes to play, second-half substitute, Henry Kayemba sealed St Lawrence’s victory with their fifth goal of the day.

The two sides will meet at Kavule in the second leg of the quarterfinals duel on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

Makerere University head coach Douglas Bamweyana has noted that it’s only the start ahead of quite a tough campaign.

Makerere University registered a narrow 2-1 victory against Uganda Christian University at the Tear Gas grounds on Friday morning.

While speaking to the press after the game, Bamweyana revealed that the boys should keep their heads high and ensure that they fight for a victory away from home.

“It’s the start not entirely the nature of the game we wanted to play. Though the result is not exactly bad, it’s still something we can take,” Bamweyana said.

“We are looking forward to the next game because that is the most important assignment. We can not get excited because the result is evenly balanced since they scored here,” he added.

Bamweyana also added that both teams were disturbed by the state of the pitch denying them to play a style with which they flourish.

“We shall work more on our quality. Of course, the pitch was not good for both sides. Of course, we need to improve and show the quality of our team. I believe we have more ability than what we staged today.”

The tournament will resume on Tuesday, February 20 with Makerere University Business School (MUBS on the road to play Bugema University in Luwero District.

University Football League | Result

Makerere University secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Uganda Christian University in the quarterfinals first leg of the University Football League on Friday morning.

In the game that was played at Tear Gas Arena, action kicked off in the 34th minute after an interruption in the previous day.

The heavens opened duly on Thursday and action between the two sides was paused postponing the game to Friday morning.

But before the interruption, Musa Male fired the hosts ahead in the 18th minute before Geoffrey Gaganga levelled matters in the 30th minute of the game.

At half-time, the game was still locked with a 1-1 result in front of a small crowd.

The hosts took full control of the game pressing an organised UCU backline that kept their shape in the early minutes of the second stanza.

In the 59th minute, Makerere’s custodian Joel Wejuli pulled off a stunning save to deny Isaac Ofoyrwoth’s goal-bound curler.

Nicholas Ddungu restored the hosts’ lead with quite a brilliant finish as the visitors’ went to sleep for a minute.

UCU looked the better side in the final minutes of the game but were blunt in the final third, failing to bury any of their glorious chances.

Bishop Stuart University (BSU) registered a 3-1 victory against debutants ISBAT University in the ongoing 2023 University Football League in Mbarara on Thursday.

ISBAT were playing their first game in the tournament and were treated to a baptism of fire witnessing three goals find the back of their net.

It was a duel among two youthful sides taking the ball to each other without fear or favour.

The game attracted a low turn-up of fans compared to earlier games that were played in Nkozi and Kavule respectively.

In the 31st minute, Bishop Stuart University broke down the hard-working backline of ISBAT who had been patient and timely with their blocks.

Christopher Muhwezi held his nerves cool before he converted from the 12-yard mark to send the home fans into celebration.

Four minutes into the second stanza, Honest Atwijuke doubled the lead which meant the visitors had to work hard if they were to pick anything positive from the duel.

Five minutes past the hour-mark, Augustine Akakwasa made it three as the hosts showed their class and quality being quite above the visitors.

From that mark, the hosts got a bit comfortable and it gave room for ISBAT to throw some bodies upfront in search of a reply.

Their hard work paid off when they earned a well-deserved consolation thanks to Geoffrey Pirwoth’s perfect strike from the penalty spot.

The splendid victory takes Bishop Stuart University to the top of Group F.

The 2023 UFL season will continue on Friday, September 15 as Kabale will be hosting the University of Kisubi in the Group A affair.

St Lawrence University registered a 3-1 victory against Nkumba University in the 2023 University Football League at Kavule Grounds.

It was the second day of the 2023/24 campaign and surprisingly it was the same result just like that of day one at Nkonzi Grounds.

In the 8th minute, Osman Arafat Kembo shot the hosts ahead, opening the floodgates thanks to the early pressure from the hosts.

It was a perfect tap-in by Kembo capitalizing on Fahad Aniku’s low hard cross from the right flank.

In the 37th minute, Brian Kiyimba came close to giving Nkumba University a leveler but failed to guide the ball into the net with a goalkeeper to beat.

After the end of 45 minutes, it was a 1-0 lead for David Nnono’s troops.

Micheal Abura doubled the lead for St. Lawrence with a powerful header as he guided home Innocent Matenga’s cross.

A minute to the top of the hour, Matenga turned from provider to scorer as he got the third for the home side.

In the 83rd minute, Abbey Kavuma pulled back one for the visitors but it was late to pick anything positive from the game.

The next game of the campaign will have Bishop Stuart host ISBAT University in Mbarara on Thursday.

Uganda Martyrs University forward Ivan Agamile has revealed that their target is nothing but to defend their title.

The Nkozi-based side are the defending champions of the University Football League and according to Agamile, they plan to retain their accolade.

While talking to MTN Sports the forward revealed how they plan to achieve the set target.

“Our target is to defend the championship,” Agamile told MTN Sports after their victory against Bugema University.

In the opening game of the 2023/24 campaign, The Saints registered a 3-1 victory against Bugema University at the Nkozi Main grounds.

“I have managed to score while my colleague (Akbar) Ssetongo scores a brace. We want to take a game at a time but have it at the back of our heads that we want to win big,” he added.

“Our coach has beseeched us to take every game crucial so that we easily go out of the group with maximum points.

“We need to win the trophy and pay back the support from the institution. We have most of the things needed so we are fully contented,” he concluded.

Group A will continue on Friday as Kabale University welcomes the University of Kisubi on Friday, September 15.

UMU’s next game is against Kisubi on Thursday, September 28 while Bugema will host Kabaale on Sunday, October 1.

In the fourth minute, Sanny Kaija set up Moses Okello but the resultant effort was powerful though could not find the target.

Four minutes later, there was a loss of concentration in the Uganda Martyrs’ backline losing possession to Eric Sawa however his shot went wide.

In the 13th minute, Vicent Masumbuko struck a powerful effort from a freekick as Bugema’s custodian Ronald Kalungi hit the pole trying to save the ball.

In the 23rd minute, Moses Okello paved the way for Wijo Taban as Coach Eric Kisuze made the maiden change.

Ivan Agamile tapped Sanny Kaija’s delivery from close range to place the hosts into the lead.

Innocent Musuk came on for Fred Wamani in Bugema’s first change for Bugema University.

In the 46th minute, Akbar Ssentongo tapped home with a full stretch capitalising on Taban’s low delivery to set the lights on.

Ssentongo nearly found the third for the Saints through a long-range shot but went wide by a whisker.

In the 62nd minute, Kaija missed a clear-cut chance after Joseph Kayondo delivered a low hard cross into a dangerous area.

In the 76th minute, Sulaiman Ssentongo remained with a goalkeeper to beat but failed to find to bury Bugema’s best chance.

With seven minutes to full-time Sentongo completed his brace with a perfect header at the near-pole to seal the victory.

In added time Fred Wamani gave Bugema University a consolation from the 12-yard mark.
