Ugandan runners Halimah Nakaayi and Winnie Nanyondo have built chemistry over the years as fine and supportive middle-distance specialists. 

However, on Friday, both will run in different heats, hoping to progress to the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics women’s 800m. 

The duo have will have to fight to finish among first 3 in their respective heats or make the next 6 fastest overall advance to the semifinals. 

2019 World champion Nakaayi may have to look out for Jamaica’s Natoya Goule, the 2019 Pan American Games champion who set a Jamaican record of 1:56.15 in 2018. 

Similarly, Kenyan Sum Eunice Jepkoech and Norwegian Hynne Hedda pose a challenge both holding sub-1:59 personal bests ahead of heat 2 action.

Nanyondo’s PB is 1:58:63 and she seems to be the favorite to progress from heat 1. However, France Lamote Renelle – 2018 Berlin European Championships silver medalist can’t be ignored.

Swiss runner Hoffmann Lore is also bound to draw attention based on her PB of 1:58:50 as Nanyondo summons memories from her bronze finish at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2:01:38.

Women’s 800m Round 1 – Heat 1 and 2

Date and Time: Fri 30 July (4:25am and 4:33am EAT respectively)

Ugandan middle distance runner Albert Chemutai will have to be wary of the challenging field he will face when he runs heat 1 of the 3000 meters steeplechase on Friday.

The 26-year-old who is ranked 25th in the global distance rankings will need to be among the first 3 in heat 1 or make the next 6 fastest overall to advance to the final.

Chemutai will have to watch out for Ethiopian Lamecha Girma who fiercely battled Conseslus Kipruto to the line, only to lose gold by 0.01 at the 2019 World Championships.

Bedrali Djilali from France also presents more competition in the heat having finished fifth at the 2019 World Championships in 8:05.23, still his lifetime best. 

Kenyan Benjamin Kigen is one of the race favourites as well after making sixth at the 2019 Doha World Championships. He has run 8:15.09 – a season’s best this season at the Monaco Wanda Diamond League meeting.

Other notable challengers will include Spain’s Carro Fernando who won silver at the 2018 Berlin European Championships and Moroccan Tindouft Mohammed, a 6th place finisher at the 2019 Morocco African Games.

Men’s 3000m Steeplechase Round 1 – Heat 1

Kathleen Noble will deliver maximum effort after resting enough ahead of final E, her last Tokyo Olympics Rowing event on Friday.

The Ugandan is set to vye for top ranking after making the women’s single sculls Final E following her second place finish in the semi final E/F. 

Her competition includes Nigerian Toko Esther, Moroccan Fraincart Sarah, Nicaraguan Gonzalez Jarquin Evidelia, Singapore’s Poh Joan and Tala. 

A top position for Noble in Final E would mean an extraordinary milestone for the debutant at the games despite being out of the medal bracket. 

This particular race was rescheduled due to expected high wind and rain from a forecasted tropical storm Nepartak that had formed in the Philippine Sea, southeast of Japan.

Women’s Single Sculls Final E

Date and Time: Friday July 29 (2:15am EAT)

KCCA Football Club has announced the signing of Brian Kayanja on a three-year deal that runs until July 2024.

The forward joins from UPDF Football Club where he scored 8 goals in the 2020-21 Uganda Premier League and one goal in Uganda Cup.

Kayanja who has also played for BrightStars FC and Sofapaka FC before will compete for a place in Morley Byekwaso’s team with the likes of Charles Lwanga, Brian Aheebwa, Sam Ssenyonjo, and academy graduate Sadat Anaku.

He becomes KCCA’s fourth official signing after Brian Majwega, Alex Emmanuel Wasswa, and Yassar Mugerwa.

Kayanja’s first assignment will be to help the club defend the CECAFA Kagame Cup, a tournament that starts on Monday, 1st August 2021 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Background: Coached by Addy Ruiter, Chesang is a Uganda Wildlife Authority athlete.

Highlights: Chesang claimed the 4th Uganda Athletics Federation national trials posting 15:46:72 this year over 5000m. She later finished 11th in the Ethiopian Trials, Hengelo in 15:05:39. Chesang’s personal best is 15:05.39 over the 5000m. She posted this time at the Blankers-Koen Stadion, Hengelo on June 8th this year.

Highlights: Chebet has represented Uganda at the World Championships twice both at the 2019 Doha and 2017 London events. At fhe Africa Games in Morocco two years ago, she finished 5th again over the 1500m. In May this year, Chebet finished 2nd at the Next Generation Athletics in Nijmegen. She posted 15:04:89. 10 days later, Chebet crossed the tape 14th at the Hengelo Ethiopian Trials in 15:25:15.

Highlights: She represented Uganda at the 2019 World Athletics Championships, competing in women’s 5000 metres. Chelangat set a Ugandan national record of  15:00.61 in the 5000 metres in Nijmegen on June 2019. Last year, Chelangat finished 9th in 5000m at the Kip Keino Classic that took place at the  Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

After completing his move to Express Football Club, forward Joseph Akandwanaho says it’s a dream come true.

The pacy left-footed forward signed a two-year contract with the Red Eagles from Soltilo Bright Stars.

The 26-year-old netted eight league goals and set up six assists for Bright Stars.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to play for a club this huge with a rich history,” Akandwanaho said as quoted by the club website. “I am grateful to everyone who made this happen but most importantly I want to reiterate that I am here to help the club achieve its dream of winning more silverware.”

AJ as he’s fondly known will add pace to Express’ attack that already has Eric Kambale and Martin Kizza.

Mary Kom, the face of India’s boxing contingent, faced a shocking defeat — split decision — at the hands of Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia to bow out from the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. Valencia won the bout 3-2. Valencia advanced to the quarter-finals of the showpiece event after defeating Mary Kom in the women’s flyweight (48-51kg) category event. Swimmer Sajan Prakash finished second in his Heat but that was not enough to advance the semifinals of the men’s 100m butterfly event as India’s underwhelming campaign at the Tokyo Olympics ended here on Thursday. Prakash, who also competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, finished second in the second-slowest heat with a time of 53.45s. Japan swept Thursday’s judo events at the Tokyo Olympics, with Shori Hamada winning a gold medal in the women’s under 78-kilogram event and Aaron Wolf claiming the men’s under 100-kg title at Nippon Budokan.Hamada defeated Madeleine Malonga of France shortly before Wolf completed an outstanding performance by the Olympic host, prevailing in a nail-biting final over South Korean Cho Gu Ham. World No.1 Tennis player Novak Djokovic on Thursday defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets to enter the semifinals of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. He completely dominated the match with 6-2 and 6-0 to continue his ruthlessness in top-flight tennis in 2021. He is chasing a golden slam having never won at Olympic singles. Express Football Club head coach Wasswa Bbosa has named the squad that will feature at the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

The tournament is slated to kick off on 1st August 2021 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Red Eagles’ new signings Joseph Akandwanaho and goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa make the squad along with experienced defender Murushid Juuko who just extended his contract for another season.
